A trash can for the garage is practical and can save you a lot of time walking in and out of the house when you’re busy working on a project in the garage, or when you’re busy spring cleaning!
Items we throw out most often include broken Christmas decorations, cat litter, old or broken tools, unfinished crafts, old paintbrushes and lots of other stuff. In some cases, for example if the garage is attached to the kitchen, food will be thrown into the garage trash can as well.
So we can agree that the trash can for our garage should be sturdy and made out of a strong material that doesn’t easily break when old tools or other heavy items get tossed. Also, it should have a closed lid, because you don’t want to attract insects and vermin. A closed lid is also a good idea if you plan to throw cat litter into the garage garbage can.
We’ve put together a review of the top 4 best garbage cans for the garage. We’ll also reveal the runner up, so keep reading!

How to keep the smell of trash out of your garage?
There is nothing worse than having to park your precious car in a smelly garage! Although it’s impossible to prevent the trash from smelling, there a quite some things we can do to control odor and prevent it from spreading.
The first step is to tackle the things that are the biggest cause of the smell.
Food is the biggest cause of a smelly garbage can. Foods like fruit, vegetables, and meat start rotting and attract flies and other bugs. Bag food up before throwing it in the can. This will cut down most of the smell.
A lot of people use their garage garbage can for throwing out cat litter. Just like with food, you should bag the litter up before throwing it out. You could choose to use scented dog poop bags for an extra fresh smell in your trash can.
The next step is to use smart tricks to absorb the smell…..
Sprinkle some baking soda on the bottom of the bin. Baking soda is known to absorb the bad odor. Also, sprinkle some baking soda in between the trash every now and then.
Not only baking soda will do the trick, but you can also use coffee beans, cat litter (without the poop of course – haha) lemon peels or dryer sheets. You don’t even have to use new dryer sheets, you’ll still get plenty of bang for your buck with used dryer sheets.
The last step, disinfect your garage trash can on a regular basis.
Clean and disinfect
First, spray the inside of the can with water. If you have a high-pressure washer, use this to make this step easier.
If your trash can is extra dirty, clean it with dish soap or a mix of water and baking soda first. After that, simply spray the inside with undiluted distilled white vinegar to disinfect the bin and remove the smell. Let it sit for a few minutes before rinsing it with clean water. You can also use Lysol instead of white vinegar.
Let the trash can dry first before adding a liner and putting it back in the garage.
